Ideogram vs FLUX for T-Shirt Designs

Choose Ideogram when the design depends on a short phrase, poster-like layout, or its built-in background-removal workflow. Choose FLUX.2 when you want a specific production tier: max for BFL's highest-quality output, pro for production work, flex for typography control, or klein for speed and local options.

Neither name is a print-readiness guarantee. A usable shirt file still needs enough pixels for the intended physical size, an alpha channel when transparency is required, readable small text, and a licence that fits the way you generated it.

Ideogram released Ideogram 4.0 on June 3, 2026. The release is a 9.3-billion-parameter open-weight text-to-image model. Hosted access is available through Ideogram's app and API. Ideogram's own FAQ says it excels at text but can still misspell or omit words, and it documents a separate background-removal feature.

Black Forest Labs describes FLUX.2 as a family rather than one model. Max is the highest-quality tier, pro is the production tier, flex adds fine-grained controls and typography emphasis, and klein targets low latency. FLUX.2 supports output up to 4 megapixels and multiple reference images. Those are provider specifications, not independent claims that every prompt will work.

“Better typography” is too broad to settle with one screenshot. Test the exact job. Use the same canvas ratio, phrase, number of outputs, and visual brief in Ideogram 4.0 and FLUX.2 flex. Keep the phrase original and short enough to work on a shirt.

1. Generate four outputs with the exact phrase and punctuation.
2. Count spelling, missing-word, and duplicated-letter errors.
3. Check hierarchy: can the main line be read at marketplace-thumbnail size?
4. Inspect letter edges at the intended print dimensions.
5. Repeat with a second phrase before choosing a production model.

If the text must be exact, the safer workflow is to generate the illustration without lettering and set the words as editable type in a canvas editor. That removes spelling luck from the production file.

Ideogram's hosted-service terms say the company does not claim ownership of user outputs or restrict commercial use. Users are still responsible for third-party rights. The open weights are different: Ideogram publishes a non-commercial model agreement and sells separate commercial self-hosting rights.

FLUX licensing also changes by route. Black Forest Labs lists FLUX.2 klein 4B under Apache 2.0, klein 9B under its non-commercial licence, and dev as non-commercial. Paid API access and third-party hosts have their own terms. Record the exact model, provider, plan, and generation date for work you intend to sell.

Start with the printer's template. If the intended artwork is 14 × 16 inches at 300 pixels per inch, the file needs 4200 × 4800 pixels. Changing a 1024-pixel file's DPI label does not add detail.
