How to Create a Print-Ready T-Shirt Design

A print-ready t-shirt design has enough source pixels for its placed print size, matches the current product template, uses the right background treatment, and has been checked on the actual garment colors you plan to sell. There is no single canvas size or DPI setting that makes every file ready for every shirt.
That last point matters. The old version of this guide prescribed 4500 × 5400 px at 300 DPI for everything. It sounded reassuring. It was also wrong.
Printful asks for at least 150 DPI at the actual print dimensions. Printify says the recommended dimensions vary by product and print area, with 300 DPI typical for many JPEG and PNG uploads. Redbubble publishes different pixel minimums for different apparel products and says DPI/PPI metadata does not affect the uploaded design. The product template wins.
The print-ready checklist
Before uploading, confirm all six:
- You downloaded or opened the current template for the exact product and print area.
- The artwork has enough pixels at the size it will actually print.
- Transparent areas are genuinely transparent, with no pale fringe.
- Important details sit inside the provider's marked print area.
- Text and fine lines remain readable at the placed size.
- You previewed the enabled garment colors and ordered a sample before scaling.
File requirements vary by provider and product
Here is what the providers themselves say as of July 25, 2026:

Do not copy a dimension from a blog, including this one, into every product. A standard tee front, premium tee, cap, sleeve, and all-over-print panel are different manufacturing surfaces.
Step 1: Start with the current product template
Choose the provider, blank, print technique, and print area before final export. In Printify, the Upload panel shows the requirements for the selected product. Printful puts file guidelines in its catalog. Redbubble publishes pixel thresholds by product and offers templates for trickier formats.
If you plan to list on more than one service, keep an editable master and export a separate file for each required aspect ratio. One portrait file stretched across tees, hats, mugs, and phone cases is not an efficient master. It is a crop problem waiting to happen.
Step 2: Calculate effective resolution
DPI becomes useful only when it is tied to physical size:
effective pixels per inch = pixel width ÷ printed width in inches
A 3000 px-wide image placed at 10 inches wide has 300 pixels per inch. Place the same file at 15 inches and it has 200 pixels per inch. Changing a metadata field from 72 to 300 does not invent the missing pixels.
Printful's minimum is 150 DPI at actual size. Printify typically recommends 300 DPI for JPEG and PNG, with lower targets for some large products. Use the provider's number for the actual product.
Scaling a small raster image upward may make the file dimensions larger, but it cannot recover original edges, lettering, or texture. Start with the largest clean source you have and judge AI upscaling by inspecting the result at 100%, not by trusting the new dimensions.
Step 3: Choose PNG, JPEG, or SVG for the artwork
Use a transparent PNG when the garment should show around the design. A JPEG cannot store transparency, so its background becomes part of the print.
JPEG can still be correct for an intentional rectangular image or a full background when the provider accepts it. Printify also accepts SVG, which suits simple vector artwork, but its own guidance advises against SVG for photographs and mostly raster content.
Check transparent edges on both black and white backgrounds. A pale halo that disappears on the editor's checkerboard can become obvious on a dark shirt. Also remember that white artwork is not the same as transparency: white pixels request white ink; transparent pixels request no ink.
Step 4: Handle color without pretending a monitor is a proof
Redbubble recommends designing in CMYK and converting the finished artwork to RGB before upload. Other POD upload workflows commonly accept RGB files. Follow the named provider rather than a universal internet rule.
No profile can make a glowing display match ink on every fabric. Garment color, fiber content, pretreatment, white underbase, print method, and printer calibration all affect the result.
Use contrast deliberately:
- Preview light artwork on every light garment you enable.
- Preview dark artwork on every dark garment.
- Do not assume fluorescent screen colors are available as garment ink.
- Keep a record of the source file and product settings used for each sample.
Step 5: Check text, lines, and placement at final size
Zooming into a design can hide practical problems. View it at roughly the size a shopper sees in a listing thumbnail, then inspect the print file at 100%.
Look for:
- letters touching or filling in;
- hairline strokes that disappear against fabric texture;
- tiny distress marks that become visual noise;
- accidental pixels beyond the intended artwork;
- a composition that sits awkwardly once the provider scales it for smaller garments.
Printify says apparel designs are scaled down for smaller garment sizes to preserve aspect ratio and are not scaled up beyond size L. That is another reason to preview the size range instead of relying on one medium-shirt mockup.
Step 6: Export and inspect the actual upload
Export from the editable master using the product's required format and dimensions. Then upload it and inspect the provider preview.
Do not stop at “upload accepted.” Check:
- Is the artwork the intended physical size?
- Is it centered relative to the garment, not merely the canvas?
- Are any edges clipped?
- Does transparency behave correctly?
- Does every enabled color have enough contrast?
- Are alternate print areas, such as back or sleeve, empty unless you meant to use them?
For Redbubble, enabling several products from one image can produce awkward crops because product ratios differ. Check each product you turn on.
Step 7: Order and wash a sample
A mockup is a placement preview, not a print proof. Order at least one sample before sending paid traffic or expanding a collection.
Inspect it in ordinary indoor light and daylight. Check fine lines, small text, color shifts, placement, fabric show-through, and the feel of the print. Photograph the sample, wash it according to the care instructions, and inspect it again.
That sample gives you evidence specific to the blank, color, print provider, and artwork. A generic 300-DPI badge cannot do that.
Common print-file mistakes
- Re-labeling 72 DPI as 300 DPI without adding usable source detail
- Treating 4500 × 5400 px as a universal requirement
- Exporting transparent artwork as JPEG
- Filling the whole template because the print area is available
- Using one aspect ratio for every product
- Trusting a mockup without checking each enabled garment color
- Uploading thin AI-generated lettering without correcting it
- Skipping a sample because the upload tool rated the file “high quality”
